The Princess Diaries (Full Screen Edition)
A thoroughly engaging fairy tale family-friendly without degrading, The Princess Diaries is your basic Cinderella makeover story given a respectful, affectionate touch of the game fresh, energetic players and scenarios that skirts schmaltz supports gentle, effective comedy. Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) is a curly-haired, wearing glasses 15 years old girl whose two highest ambitions are to become invisible and to get a few smooches from the slickly attractive school heartthrob. As a girl who can not stand the spotlight, so he threw up during debate class, she was shocked and horrified when cold continental grandmother (Julie Andrews) appears and tells that he is a European royal crown princess of Genovia. Soon, Mia has been doing "princess lessons" (and a makeover) from the queen's grandmother, and eventually he became a flower girl, confident glow - despite worries and pressure that her new status brings. What makes Princess Diaries work is director Garry Marshall honest, irony-free approach to the material (based on Meg Cabot's novel). Compared to most snarky, ultra-hip teen comedies, The Princess Diaries is a refreshing and pleasant square, content to win you over on charm alone and not the slick trick bag. Hathaway is a charismatic role model draw with a sharp sense of comic time, and Andrews - who came to stardom as the object of a makeover supreme in My Fair Lady on Broadway - at the most glorious to him whether the right to teach Mia royal wave or learning how to eat a corndog . Both are equipped with the leading lady finely tuned cast, including Hector Elizondo as Genovia's head of security (and romantic partners Andrews), Heather Matarazzo as Mia's best friend, and Robert Schwartzman as the good guy who ultimately wins Mia's heart. All in all, the royal pleasure.
